Management of quality in the UK education sector has undergone major changes in the past few years, but is this all beneficial? Are the quality bodies and systems helpful to stakeholders? Do stakeholders understand or even know about BSI, Estyn, ETINI, HMIE, ISI, Ofqual, Ofsted, PSRBs, QAA, SIS, UKBA and others? Perhaps such variety is important and avoids the dangers of a one-size-fits-all system. Alternatively, perhaps the education sector is not hugely different from commercial sectors in which consumers are so confused about different tariffs they find it challenging to make rational choices. The distinctions between compulsory-age education, further education and higher education may be useful for pedagogical purposes, but should there be any differences between these sectors in the ways quality is managed? Are there models that may be helpful in taking a critical approach to reviewing the management of UK education quality? Is it a question not so much about what stakeholders know, but more about how do they know what they know?
