Contemporary Collecting Wales Project.
Half day workshops to be held as follows:
Wednesday 16th January 2-4pm Powysland Museum, Welshpool.
Tuesday 22nd January 1030 to 1230 Bangor Museum & Art Gallery.
Wednesday 23rd January 2-4pm Carmarthen County Museum, Abergwili.
Thursday 24th January 1030 to 1230. Newport Museum & Art Gallery.
The aim of the workshops will be to invite debate about contemporary
collecting, to network ideas and to learn from others.
The main aim will be how to encourage partnership working regarding the
collection and display of contemporary items in museums across the country.
This will be based on the principle of a distributed national collection,
including drafting a strategy for future collecting and disposal.
Other areas of discussion will include
. how museums can rationalise decision making when acquiring and
disposing of contemporary collections and encourage museums to undertake
collection reviews where needed
. what wording to add to collecting and disposal policies to enable
them to collect and dispose of relevant contemporary items (this would
include long-term and permanent transfers)
. establishing a means of recording and disseminating information
about contemporary collections in museums in Wales.
The workshops will try and challenge perceptions about what we should be
collecting.
These workshops are open to all museums - especially important for curators
and volunteers who are concerned about collection development as part of the
Accreditation standard.
This is an important area -have your say! It is an action within the Museum
Strategy.
It would be useful to have an idea of your attendance. No charge -
Refreshments provided.
The project is funded by Welsh Government through CyMAL, The Federation of
Museums and Art Galleries of Wales and a Museum Association Special
Collections Project grant.
