found Europeana, Modes Users Association, Orangeleaf, Historypin, Museum Sites,
Culture Grid and e-Hive. Does anyone have any other website
recommendations, suggestions,
experience of using sites like these, or have decided not to for various
reasons? I would be very interested in getting in touch with you if so.

There are a number of other companies who can create a tailored system for you, you haven't given any indication of your selection criteria, but sometimes what you want won't be available off the shelf and an experienced company will often be able to provide exactly what you need, often for the same level of investment.
I work with a company that builds bespoke online collection systems and they're also exploring adapting off the shelf content management systems like WordPress and Drupal to present heritage collections online.
If you have a pre-exisiting collections management system that might have a web enabling module.
Many years ago we developed a bespoke system for torbytes.com (long since neglected, more's the pity, when it became an in-house project at the end of it's funding)
I'd be happy to chat off-list about how a tailored system based on Open Source technologies might be a better bet than a one size fits all off the shelf package.

The idea is to look at them in terms of their return on investment for your effort in sharing content through them.

ON:meedi:a is a web-based ecosystem for managing, processing and publishing multimedia. Among others, this platform allows content holders, archives and creatives to annotate and enrich their content, publish interactive collections for different purposes for example as virtual exhibitions or guided tours. It can be integrated into existing legacy systems. Followtheplace is also a web application where users can upload and share geo-tagged photos and promote so specific places and events. If the photos are not geotagged we provide an easy to use facility to geotag them.

I think Nick's distinction between platforms and systems is important -
when you posted the original question I tried to put that exact issue into
words and he has summed it up in just two!
If you're looking for platforms then the list is endless - for starters you
should certainly add Flickr, Pinterest etc. I'm doubly glad I'm going to
UKMW2012 now as I'll be fascinated to see Nick's presentation about these.
You might do as well to build a simple matrix of your required features and
audiences, and equally of their requirements - for example if not all items
can be geotagged that rules out Historypin (and others, like newcomer
Findery); if not all items have images then that rules out Flickr ...
You could end up concluding that none of them fit the bill, and then you'll
be back to a web-enabled system. But even if that is the case don't rule
out putting certain curated sets on carefully targeted platforms.

Your list includes a number of systems/organisations which do very different things:
Europeana & Culture Grid: aggragate data about items from other organisations (the items have to already have to be on the web somewhere else)
Modes Users Association: sell and support collections management systems which can output content for use on a web site
Orangeleaf: are website developers who will build you whatever you want
Historypin is a social media site
E-Hive: is a "cloud" collections management system for museums and others which will, if you want, public web access to object records
The first question to ask is what do you and the museums want to achive? Things that you might want achive:
A place where residents and visitors to Wiltshire can search all the county's collections
A mechanism for putting collections on line for those organisations who don't have the capacity to put their own collections on line
A source of collections records for others to aggregate or reuse
A somewhere where organisations can manage their collections (either replacing their existing systems or because they don't have one)
Somewhere where the public can comment on collections
Once you have a fairly good idea of what you want to achieve you can then start comparing how well different approaches deliver.

For recent online collections work* at the Ashmolean Museum we've worked
successfully with Keepthinking (http://www.keepthinking.it/), and use their
content/collection management system "Qi" (http://www.keepthinking.it/qi),
though we're using the latter mostly as a content management system, rather
than as our main collections management system, bringing in our collections
data from Zetcom's MuseumPlus 5.5.

We still in the process of migrating to the latest version of "Qi", but it
seems impressive so far,

The Cotesbach Educational Trust (CET) is seeking a part time
PROJECT DIRECTOR (28 hours per week)
£32,000 pro rata
Cotesbach Educational Trust, a registered charity, is renovating an 18th Century Schoolhouse and associated buildings, located on Cotesbach Estate, to provide a heritage and environment education resource centre. This exciting project aims to provide public access to a wealth of heritage resources, and in particular to promote these resources to schools,youth and specialist interest groups centred on heritage, the environment and the arts. The project has received a major grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to complete the building work, along with support from a number of trusts, foundations and other local supporters. The capital project is underway and scheduled for completion in Spring 2013 when the centre will be open to the public.
As part of the preparation work for submitting the HLF Stage Two funding bid, the Trustees have undertaken a detailed feasibility study which includes the preparation of a five year Business Plan and Activity Plan. We are now seeking a Project Director to lead the development and implementation of project activities, including the setting up of the education programmes, and ensuring the ongoing sustainability of the project. A large element of the revenue requirements for the first year of activities, including funding for this post, has already been secured.
The successful applicant will have a degree or equivalent and will have at least 3 years of experience of project management and/or working in a start-up situation; an awareness of how the project could benefit young people and contribute to national curriculum programmes of study; financial management skills; and the communication skills to promote the project to a wider range of external stakeholders and develop a range of new partnerships.
The post-holder will be expected to work from home, visiting the Cotesbach site as required and at least once per week, during the initial period while the buildings are being completed.

UKMW12, the Museums Computer Group's annual Museums on the Web
conference, will be held at the Wellcome Collection in London on 30
November 2012.
UKMW12 is about being ‘strategically digital’. Responding to the
issues faced by museums today, it's an opportunity to take a step back

Http://blackcountryhistory.org.uk The system aggregates data from 10 different partners collections databases and allows users of the website to seamlessly search the collections. Dear All,
I'm wondering if
anyone can help - I'm currently working on a viability project on whether to
update/replace the Wiltshire Council owned website 'Wiltshire Treasures' (an
online collections database for Wiltshire museums). I have started
investigating existing online collections database platforms and have so far
found Europeana, Modes Users Association, Orangeleaf, Historypin, Museum Sites,
Culture Grid and e-Hive. Does anyone have any other website
recommendations, suggestions,
experience of using sites like these, or have decided not to for various
reasons? I would be very interested in getting in touch with you if so.
