READERS AND SPECTATORS IN ITALY: TOWARDS THE FORMATION OF A NATIONAL AUDIENCE (1750-1890)

Organized by the Alberto Italian Studies Institute of Seton Hall University (USA) and the Department of Italian at the University of Warwick (UK).

We are pleased to announce a two-day international conference in Venice on the development, beginning in the late eighteenth-century, of what may be considered a modern Italian audience: readers and spectators who, as an albeit diverse group, collectively reflected the modernizing effects of the social, historical, economic, and technological transformations taking place in Italy during this period. 

The late eighteenth and the nineteenth century in Italy marked a period of great advancement not only in the production but also consumption of culture. This advancement was anything but uniform and universal, with patterns of production, circulation, and readership of texts showing particular features related to gender, social class, reading practices, and specific local characteristics. Nonetheless, with educational reforms, nascent urbanization, and a relatively wider social mobility, more Italians gained access to both the idea and the inchoate reality of a national cultural life, resulting in the rise of the professional writer as well as in the development of new literary genres or forms of entertainment, and of a more stratified public of readers and spectators. Journalists, publishers, and more generally, writers began paying special attention to their audiences, who could determine the success or failure of their cultural enterprises. Such attention assumed particular relevance in the late nineteenth century with the construction of a national culture, aspiring to reach an audience distributed throughout the entire country and even abroad. 

Issues to be addressed may include:
.	The relationship between production and consumption of culture; in what ways did genre develop in relation to readership/spectatorship?
.	The creation of a national, diversified public of readers and spectators through journalism, theatre and fiction. 
.	The circulation of texts: were they bought or borrowed; read aloud or silently; read in private or socially?
.	The relationship between specialized and general readerships.
.	Factors determining the rise of the figures of the professional writer, critic, and publisher.
.	The popularization of science through reading, and the growth of self-help books.
.	The visibility of differences of gender, age, class, and region in the identification of real or imagined readerships and audiences.
.	National debates on what constituted a modern public: how was a sense of a national society constructed, adapted, or challenged through readership/spectatorship?
.	Relationships between publishers and readers as revealed through letters to the editor/publisher (in periodicals), book prefaces by publishers, etc.
.	The overlap between classical and popular theatre: how did writers and spectators construct notions of differentiated audiences, or not?
.	The development of a particular audience for opera in this period, in relation to other audiences and readerships.
.	Male and female actors and singers, and the mode of reproduction of their fame. 
.	The role of emotions in the production, circulation, and response to literary and theatrical texts in this period.

Abstracts (max. 300 words) of proposed 20-minute papers, together with a brief academic biography, should be sent by email to Katrin Wehling-Giorgi ([log in to unmask]) by 3rd February 2013. Papers may be in either English or Italian.

Siamo lieti di annunciare un convegno internazionale che si terrà a Venezia per due giorni sullo sviluppo, iniziato nella seconda metà del diciottesimo secolo, di ciò che può essere considerato un pubblico moderno: lettori e spettatori che, sebbene all'interno di un gruppo diversificato, espressero nell'insieme gli effetti modernizzanti delle trasformazioni sociali, economiche, e tecnologiche avvenute in quel periodo. Il tardo Settecento e soprattutto l'Ottocento hanno segnato un periodo di grande sviluppo non solo nella produzione ma anche nel consumo della cultura. Questo sviluppo non ha avuto chiaramente tratti uniformi o universali, ma è stato caratterizzato da processi di produzione, circolazione e lettura di testi, legati a questioni di genere, classe sociale, e pratiche di lettura, dimostrando spesso caratteri specifici locali. Allo stesso tempo, un numero maggiore di italiani cominciò ad essere esposta all'idea così come ad un'incipiente realtà di vita culturale nazionale. È in questo periodo che nasce la figura dello scrittore professionale e si sviluppano nuovi generi letterari così nuove forme d'intrattenimento e un pubblico maggiormente stratificato di lettori e spettatori. Giornalisti, editori, e scrittori cominciarono a prestare maggiore attenzione al pubblico, il quale poteva determinare il successo o il fallimento delle loro imprese culturali. Tale attenzione assunse una particolare rilevanza nel momento in cui, nella seconda metà dell'Ottocento, si iniziò a costruire una cultura nazionale, con l'aspirazione a raggiungere un pubblico distribuito su tutto il territorio nazionale e anche all'estero. 

Possibili questioni da includere nelle relazioni:

.	Rapporto tra produzione e consumo di cultura. In che modo generi diversi di scrittura si svilupparono rispetto alla presenza di nuovi gruppi di lettori e spettatori?
.	La creazione di un pubblico diversificato attraverso il giornalismo, il teatro e il romanzo.
.	Circolazione dei testi. Come circolavano? Venivano acquistati, presi in prestito, letti a voce alta o in silenzio, in privato o in gruppo?
.	Rapporto tra pubblico generale e pubblico specializzato di lettori.
.	Quali fattori determinarono l'emergere della figura dello scrittore professionale, del critico e dell'editore? 
.	Popolarizzazione delle scienze attraverso la lettura e lo sviluppo del self-helpismo.
.	In che modo le differenze di genere, classe, età e provenienza regionale hanno determinato la creazione di gruppi reali o immaginati di lettori o spettatori? 
.	Dibattiti a livello nazionale su ciò che costituiva un pubblico moderno.
.	Rapporto tra editore e lettore attraverso le lettere all'editore (sui giornali) o prefazioni a libri scritte dall'editore, ecc. 
.	Intersezioni tra teatro classico e teatro popolare. In che modo scrittori e spettatori costruivano nozioni differenziate di pubblico o spettacolo teatrale?
.	In che modo l'opera sviluppò un suo pubblico specifico e differenziato da quello di altri gruppi di  lettori o spettatori?
.	Attori, attrici, cantanti e i mezzi di diffusione della loro notorietà.
.	Il ruolo delle emozioni nella produzione, circolazione, e risposta ai testi letterari e teatrali di questo periodo.
