'Rome Outside Rome. The Exportation of 19th Century Sacred Art to the
Old and New World'
Speaker: Giovanna Capitelli, Leverhulme Visiting Professor at Durham
University and Associate Professor of History of Art at the University
of Calabria
21 November 2012, 3.30 – 5 pm
Parkinson Building, Seminar Room B.11, University of Leeds
ABSTRACT
Rome was an international and cosmopolitan capital of the arts, even in
the middle of the 19th century, when the pressure of the Risorgimento
movement became very visible and the Papal State saw its temporal power
in crisis. Enduring centre for artistic formation, important art-market
for antiquities and Ancient Masters, Rome still hosted a large community
of artists, who survived during the on-going political and economic
crisis thanks to the pope’s patronage and to the art commissions
provided by the foreign catholic communities. This lecture aims to
explore the flood of exportation of sacred art from Rome towards Chile,
Malta, Ireland, Turkey, etc. showing the reasons for such an extensive
phenomenon and the consequences of the building of a new sacred
imaginary that preserves its strength until now.
SPEAKER
Giovanna Capitelli is Associate Professor of History of Art at the
University of Calabria. Her interests are particularly focused on
figurative culture in Rome in the age of Restoration; she investigates
the so called 'system of the arts' in the eternal city: artistic
production, circulation of works, patronage, art-market, art-criticism.
As one of the few specialists of the post-Napoleonic 19th century - one
of the less-investigated chapters of the History of Art of the Papal
State - she has published many essays and a book (Mecenatismo pontificio
e borbonico alla vigilia dell’Unità, 2011), organized several
exhibitions (Maestà di Roma da Napoleone all’Unità d’Italia, 2003) and
symposia (La pittura di storia in Italia, 2008; Roma fuori di Roma,
2011). She is currently preparing a monograph entitled L’arte della
religione. Cultura figurativa a Roma al tempo di Pio IX.
