Structural and functional characterisation of histone code reader proteins involved in epigenetic control mechanisms
A joint international 4-year studentship is proposed between the University Medical Center Freiburg (Germany) and Diamond Light Source (UK). The project characterises structural and functional aspects of specific methyl lysine recognition by histone code reader proteins. Histones are subject to a plethora of post-translational modifications including lysine methylation. Placement, removal, and recognition of lysine methyl marks by writer, eraser, and reader proteins contribute to the control of cell functions by regulating chromatin structure and gene transcription. In the course of the study the functions of selected reader proteins will be investigated using biochemical, molecular biology, and structural biology techniques.
The project provides an outstanding opportunity for a PhD candidate to take advantage on the one hand of the excellent scientific environment of the University Medical Center Freiburg with state-of-the-art expertise in biochemical and molecular biology techniques, cell culture systems, and mouse models. On the other hand, Diamond Light Source, a world leading third generation synchrotron facility, provides a strong beamline portfolio and an active beamline development programme combining a wealth of expertise in macromolecular crystallography, technique and software development, and access to other techniques relevant for structural studies available at Diamond, the Research Complex at Harwell, and on the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus.
Duration: 4 years
Degree awarded by University of Freiburg (Germany)
