Dear Friends and Colleagues,
I’m saddened to learn about the death of Professor Alexander Doty (Indiana University, Bloomington). He was
killed in an accident while on vacation in Bermuda in August, though the news just reached me today.
Alex was a prominent scholar in the fields of LGBTQ film and popular culture. He published "Making Things Perfectly
Queer: Interpreting Mass Culture" and "Flaming Classics: Queering the Film Canon". He also co-edited "Out in
Culture: Lesbian, Gay and Queer Essays on Popular Culture".
Alex loved the films of Powell and Pressburger. I met him when he attended the Michael Powell Centenary
Conference at Bangor in 2005, He wrote fascinating queer readings of 'The Red Shoes' (in Ellis Hanson (ed.) "OutTakes") and of 'A Canterbury Tale' (in Robin Griffiths (ed.) "British Queer Cinema").
I’d like to salute the work of a generous and influential scholar. He will be hugely missed.
