Just 'for information' ( I have already contacted Mark about this separately but cannot resist blowing a trumpet for a close friend ) Richard Ireland of the Law Department at Aberystwyth University has studied this in some depth, published on the subject and is an approachable academic!
He can be contacted via the university or through the enquiry form on the Welsh Legal History Society website http://www.welshlegalhistory.org/
Best wishes to all

Hi Mark,
You may also want to contact the Bethlem Royal Hospital Archives and Museums as they have an interest in this and may know more. You might also want to take a look at their recent blog post - http://bethlemheritage.wordpress.com/2012/11/29/hospital-snapshots-2/
Best wishes,

Hi Mark
These theories were very popular in the 19th century and into the early part of the 20th, but then became discredited (partly by the rise of eugenics and nazism). Fingerprinting also took over as the main form of identification of individual criminals.
I don't therefore know of any modern studies, but there's an interesting survey of the theories on the New Zealand Police Museum website https://sites.google.com/site/newzealandpolicemuseum/home/online-exhibit
ions/mug-shots/otheruses (click through to the "games" testing whether you can identify their crimes too)
We (not Newcastle City Archives!) have a number of mugshots sets on our Flickr site that have been very popular http://www.flickr.com/photos/twm_news, though the 1930s set that doesn't major on the physiognomy has had the most views http://www.flickr.com/photos/twm_news/sets/72157631080087096/
Best wishes

Subject: Photographs of Victorian prisoners
We have a large collection of photographs of Victorian prisoners which we would like to use in various promotion and marketing areas. I know that Newcastle City Archives put some online a while ago and I'm sure there must be some work on this area. We have all the personal details, family backgrounds, etc, but does anyone know of any studies of prison photography in this period - particularly in relation to physiology and identification of criminal types.
Many thanks
Mark
