Hello,
I am working on a VHS digitisation project. Currently my colleagues and I are selecting file wrappers and codecs for preservation and access purposes.
Originally we had intended to digitise to create 3 file versions of each video:
preservation master - uncompressed
(e.g. OP-1A MXF, or possibly .mov or .avi)
mezzanine version (for playing over local area network and editing) - lossy compression
(e.g. cineform codec in .mov wrapper or DV25 codec in .mov wrapper)
proxy version (for webstreaming) - lossy compression
(e.g. .h264 codec in .mp4 wrapper)
I recently approached some potential vendors to discuss this specification. A few commented that for a low quality format such as VHS, uncompressed video files are not necessary. Instead they recommended one of the mezzanine version specifications would be suitable as a preservation master
It would be really helpful to hear from anyone who has a perspective on this.
Discounting the costs of storing/managing large uncompressed files, do you perceive an uncompressed preservation master to be best practice for long-term preservation?
I will summarise any feedback.
Many thanks in advance,
Natalya
