1. Policy and Communications consultant needed (4)

Dear Simon,

I would suggest that you consider placing the advert on the House of Commons free jobs page http://www.w4mpjobs.org/
It doesn't just advertise parliamentary-related jobs, although that was why it was set up. From past experience I know that advertising science policy jobs on here can reach an interested audience.

Best wishes with the recruitment, Hannah

Subject: Policy and Communications consultant needed

Hello,

I'm looking to recruit someone to help with our policy and
communications work here at the Software Sustainability Institute
(University of Southampton). Apart from plugging the job on psci-comm, I
was wondering whether anyone had any advice about advertising this kind
of role? We're looking at putting the advert out on jobs.ac.uk, Guardian
jobs and maybe on Monster too. Any help would be very much appreciated!

In short, we're looking for someone who can write, can put together a
strong argument and has a general knowledge of science. It's a two-year
post, on a salary scale of £27,578 to £33,884.

The basic information is in the job advert:
https://www.jobs.soton.ac.uk/Vacancy.aspx?ref=175612FP

I also wrote a blog post with a bit more information about the job and
working for the Institute:

Regards,

Simon.

Subject: Science Communication Conference dates and topics

Dear psci-com

We are starting to think about content for the 2013 Science Communication Conference and would really value your input in helping us shape the event by asking you what you'd like to see in the programme. We try to have a programme that is a mix of sessions that we, as organisers, plan as well as having sessions that anyone else can suggest and organise.

We will announce a call for proposals shortly where you can suggest a session that you would like to organise but in the mean time we wondered if you could suggest any key issues that you think we should address.

Here are a few suggestions that came up at a brainstorming last week to get you thinking so any comments on these or completely new ideas would be most welcome.

* Open access
* Links between public engagement and policy
* Links between PR and public engagement
* Perceived tension between academics who study scicomm and practitioners
* REF and the impact statement
* Making the most of partnerships
* Cuts and funding

About the conference
The British Science Association organises the Conference in partnership with the Wellcome Trust. Next year it will take place in London on Thursday 15 and Friday 16 May. This two day event is the only cross-sector conference, bringing together people from across the science communication field. Over 400 people usually attend the conference, including both seasoned sci-commers and those who are new to the sector. Representatives from science centres, festivals, research councils, universities, learned societies, charities as well as freelancers and small consultancies enjoy networking among the variety of delegates attending.

Thanks!

Alice

Subject: King's College London's new BSc in Science Engagement & Communication

Dear All,
List members may be interested to know that details of our new BSc in Science Engagement & Communication are now online. The three-year degree course is due to start in September 2013 and we wanted to take this opportunity to let list members know about it and to thank those of you who have been involved in helping us develop it.
The course has been designed to provide students with practical experiences of science engagement and communication alongside academic studies of relevant research, theories and policy developments. Students will take a science course in years 1 and 2 and have a placement in one of our many excellent science engagement institutions in Year 2.If you know of anyone who might be interested in taking this course, do ask them to drop us a line for an informal chat.
Information about the course can be found here: http://graduation.kcl.ac.uk/prospectus/undergraduate/science-engagement-and-communication. We might try to get a better photograph on the site – it wasn’t our choice!
We hope that this course contributes to the growing strength of science engagement and communication in the UK and beyond!

* Open access
* Links between public engagement and policy
* Links between PR and public engagement
* Perceived tension between academics who study scicomm and practitioners
* REF and the impact statement
* Making the most of partnerships
* Cuts and funding

Thanks!

Alice

Subject: Tuesday 11 December - 'Mind the gap... in our knowldge: addressing information bias in conservation science' - 6pm, ZSL

Dear all,

TUESDAY 11 DECEMBER - 'MIND THE GAP... IN OUR KNOWLEGDE: ADDRESSING INFORMATION BIAS IN CONSERVATION SCIENCE'

Perhaps the single most important element of conservation science is information. Without sufficient information, how can we possibly expect to understand and protect species and habitats? However, despite the volume of knowledge we currently have in the 'information-age', we have a tenuous grasp of what drives trends in scientific research. If much of it is driven by the motivation and passion of individual scientists and the public at large, then does the sum body of research provide the public with a balanced understanding of the species around us? Such an understanding is critical given the diversity of species around us and current levels of threats on a global scale. This event will look at extremely well known and diverse groups of animals in which individual species vary greatly in the degree to which they are studied and recorded by scientists. We will explore biases in the information-base, highlight reasons and mechanisms behind gaps in our knowledge, and will outline some of the implications of these biases for the success of conservation science.

Speakers and talk titles

Nature and notoriety: linking species traits and the extent to which they are studied - Zoe Brooke, ZSL

Monitoring global biodiversity under data uncertainty - Lucie Bland, ZSL & Imperial College London

Conservation insights from the fossil record: unique perspectives, unique biases - Sam Turvey, ZSL

Distorted views of biodiversity: spatial and temporal bias in species occurrence data - Lizzie Boakes, Imperial College London

This meeting will be chaired by Georgina Mace, University College London

This event in the 'Communicating science' series will begin at 6.00pm (doors open at 5.00pm) and talks are scheduled to finish at 7.45pm; admission is free and open to everyone. This event will be held in the ZSL Meeting Rooms and seats will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

3-COURSE DINNER WITH THE SPEAKERS

A dinner will follow this Science and Conservation Event and everyone is welcome. Dinner places cost £35 per person including two glasses of wine and reservations should be made before 5pm on Wednesday 5 December.

Hope to see you there!

All the best,

Megan

Hello,

I'm looking to recruit someone to help with our policy and communications
work here at the Software Sustainability Institute (University of
Southampton). Apart from plugging the job on psci-comm, I was wondering
whether anyone had any advice about advertising this kind of role? We're
looking at putting the advert out on jobs.ac.uk, Guardian jobs and maybe on
Monster too. Any help would be very much appreciated!

In short, we're looking for someone who can write, can put together a strong
argument and has a general knowledge of science. It's a two-year post, on a
salary scale of £27,578 to £33,884.

The basic information is in the job advert:
https://www.jobs.soton.ac.uk/Vacancy.aspx?ref=175612FP

I also wrote a blog post with a bit more information about the job and
working for the Institute:

ommunications

Regards,

Simon.

Subject: Engage 2012; Bristol; 5th and 6th December

List members might be interested in joining us at our national conference: Engage 2012 on the 5th and 6th of December in Bristol - information below.

Also, we are running three specialist workshops on the morning of the 5th December. These workshops cover: Partnerships; Public Engagement with Health Research; and Museums working in partnership with universities. We are particularly keen to involve people who work with universities, and have free places on offer for these seminars. Again the information is below.

Thanks

Sophie

Engage 2012
Don't miss out! Bookings are going really well for the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement's Engage conference on the 5th and 6th December, so make sure you book your place quickly to avoid disappointment. This conference will explore how engagement helps universities to navigate the complexities of change and to respond to increasingly intense public interest. Taking place in Bristol, this interactive conference will look across the whole engagement agenda including research; teaching and learning; knowledge exchange; volunteering and social responsibility. For an overview of the programme and to book your space, please visit our website http://www.publicengagement.ac.uk/engage2012

Specialist workshops at Engage
If you can't come for the whole conference, why not join us for our Specialist workshops? These are open to anyone interested in public engagement, not just our conference delegates. Each workshop is a mini conference in its own right - so please help us get the word out to people you think might like to come. The workshops take place at 09.30 on Wednesday 5th December in three central Bristol locations. There are some FREE PLACES available to organisations that partner universities.

* MSHED - The People's Museum: Exploring the challenges and opportunities of museums and universities working together in the city, illustrated by the story of the M-Shed.
* Public Engagement with Health: Exploring how engagement has been embedded into research practice, and what we can learn from this important field.
* Creative Partnerships: Exploring the experience of working with universities and on the strategies, techniques and approaches that university partners have deployed to develop successful partnerships.
