Abstract
The emergence of globalisation and value chain integration over the past 2 decades or so has led to a significant increase in the share of intra-firm trade in international trade flows. More emphasis should then be given to the analysis of global supply chain relationships, design and configurations to understand the patterns of intra-firm trade and other related decisions, including mode and port choice. For ports, this presents an opportunity but also a requirement to plan and redesign their strategies towards supply chain integration.
This paper investigates the opportunities for ports to act as decoupling points in global supply chains by identifying products’ types and alignments, shippers’ distribution strategies, inventory and locational policies, contractual logistics, and other relevant aspects on supply chain design and configuration. An empirical model and several case studies will be presented and discussed to highlight the need for ports to redefine their core businesses and competencies so as to accommodate and integrate global logistics and supply chain systems.
