Hi Anne,

Actually believe it or not when the war erupted the UN moved the Roma to a camp which was besides the largest lead slag heap in Europe and the families were exposed as the children played on the heaps and the leads was high concentration and most children had no shoes plus they have it on their hands and then ingest as well.

Took us as a group 10years to campaign and get them re sited....unbelievable!

Thanks Dawn

Hello Dawn

Re your final para re Roma children and lead poisoning. How interesting - I suspect that the children are more likely to be being poisoned as a result of ingesting the lead rather than as a result of skin absorption. They are likely to be drinking water from an aquifer which could be contaminated with Pb, eating food grown on contaminated land and eating/drinking animal products from animals which have also been reared on contaminated land. Do their homes have lead pipes too - if so and if they live in a soft water area they are likely to be drinking water which is also Pb contaminated.
Hard water offers some degree of protection as the hard water results in calcium deposits which coats the lumen of the pipes. Young children being raised in Bhopal are still suffering the after effects of the union carbide disaster of the late 1980's as they are eating food and imbibing animal products raised on contaminated land.
