In collaboration with Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB), Network Rail and the UK Department for Transport, the Centre for Transport Studies at University College London (UCL) has funding for a 3.5 year Industrial CASE (iCASE) studentship on the following project:
"Cost functions of mixed railway operations and their applications to optimization"
The studentship is funded jointly by UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB).
This project aims to derive and calibrate cost functions to assess various performances of railway operations. Performances of interest include railway service times and the associated reliability, energy consumption, operating costs, and railway system capacity. The cost functions will be applied for Great Britain railway timetable optimization. The project considers mixed railway operations - which include fast/slow, local/national, and passenger/freight trains - in both planning and real-time.
The student will be supervised by a supervisory team led by Dr. Andy Chow. The supervisory team includes members at UCL, RSSB and Network Rail. The research will be conducted mainly in UCL’s premises. The student will have access to required resources and technical support provided by RSSB, Network Rail, and the Department for Transport. As an iCASE project, the student will work in RSSB for a period of three months during the project.
The studentship covers the local tuition fees at UCL and a stipend of between £15,590 per annum tax free. Travel expenses and research equipment will also be paid for.
Prospective applicants should have, or expect to gain, a good honours degree (first or upper second class honours) in statistical science, operational research, or a relevant subject. Knowledge in one or more of the following is desirable: statistical analysis, systems modelling and optimization, dynamic programming and/or transport engineering.
Further information on EPSRC iCASE studentships can be found at http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/funding/students/coll/icase/Pages/default.aspx
Eligibility - Applications are invited from UK and EU members, residing in UK. Applicants must meet the EPSRC eligibility requirements which can be found here:
