Hi All,

Two thoughts immediately spring to mind:

1. The Bovington Tank Museum staff and most especially visitors, would definitely benefit significantly from fuzzy string searching. Misspelled personal and object names are a regular cause of frustration with the existing search facilities.

2. I do feel that it is unrealistic to expect Index+ to be as good as Google with handling fuzzy searches, just look at the size of their respective development teams - they are in completely different leagues. However that does mean that I think we should accept the current situation, SSL need to move forward with the times and enhance their search options to the best of their available resources.

There's a reasonable overview of the techniques at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Approximate_string_matching

The Users Group Meeting would be a perfect platform to bring this matter to their attention and see what route forward they can offer.

Regards,

Stuart

Hi All,

We would like to canvas opinion on urging SSL to address the problem we have with the inability of Index+ to deal with fuzzy searches. Our problem is that many of our customers are police officers who have little or no knowledge of chemistry but need to find information on new and emerging drugs of abuse. Also many pharmaceuticals have names that sound alike but are spelled differently (homophones).

“Last week someone sent us a list of drugs that included Ethylphenediate. I copied and pasted this into TICTAC with a no matches found result. Suspecting that it should end in “ate” rather than “iate”, I tried this: “*Ethylphened*” and still no matches. The problem, as it turns out, is that the correct spelling is Ethylphenidate.”

If you try this in Google it returns:-

Showing results for Ethylphenidate instead of Ethylphenediate.

Am I being unrealistic in expecting Index + to be as good as Google in this respect?

Does anyone else have similar problems?

Regards,

John

Dear All,

As previously I am looking forward to the event. I have an increasing need to handle video via AssetIndex and I wonder whether there is space for debate and/or ideas for solutions/ realistic solutions on the agenda?? It would really help me, I have a number of ideas as to which way to go, but would like to use you all as a sounding board!!
