Dear Alex,
The original DCM-ERP paper of David et al.
http://www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk/spm/doc/papers/od_dcm_erp.pdf describes
simulations that show the face validity of DCM for ERP. Since any DCM
model is just a crude approximation of reality it's hard to define
what 'exists in reality' really means. I would say that DCM can show
that your observed data could be explained by a particular model and
in case when it could be explained by several models you can determine
which one is more likely. But a model can of course be strengthened if
there is converging evidence for it from several independent
measurement modalities. See e.g.
http://www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk/spm/doc/papers/Stephan_NeuroImage_47_1628_2009.pdf
.
Best,
Vladimir
