CALL FOR PAPERS AND WORKS

Royal Musical Association Research Students' Conference

3 to 5 January 2013, University of Southampton

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The RMA Annual Research Students’ Conference will take place at the University of Southampton from 3 to 5 January 2013. We invite postgraduate students to submit proposals in the following categories:

1) Individual papers on any aspect of music research (up to 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of discussion). Presentations can include a live performance element or use recorded electronic music, however, you will be expected to provide instrumentalists and repertoire. Submissions should consist of a title and an abstract of max. 200 words. All abstracts for papers should fully and clearly describe the topic of the presentation and include the following information: background, research questions, aims, summary of content and significance.

2) New works (max. 6 minutes) for an open workshop with members of the ‘Workers Union Ensemble’ (www.workersunionensemble.co.uk). The line-up available is: saxophone (soprano & alto), grand piano (limited preparations permitted), and percussion (marimba, vibraphone, glockenspiel, snare drum, two bongos, two congas, two tom-toms, kick drum, hi-hat, suspended cymbal, shaker). The use of recorded or live electronics is encouraged and the following kit will be provided: quadrophonic speaker set-up; microphones; a laptop running Logic, Supercollider and Max/MSP. Composers may bring their own laptops, a MOTU firewire interface will be provided. Scores will be accepted in all formats (e.g. conventional notation, graphic, text-based).

The deadline for submission of abstracts and compositions is Monday 29 October 2012. Please email abstracts to [log in to unmask], and post scores and parts to Dr Ben Oliver at the address below. A cover sheet should be supplied with the following information: name, postal and email address, institutional affiliation, AV requirements, and any other special requests. The conference programme and registration forms will be released in November 2012.

The conference programme boasts a keynote address by Prof. Kofi Agawu (Princeton University) alongside a special address by Prof. Mark Everist (University of Southampton, President of the RMA), and will feature the following workshops: 'Postdoctoral Opportunities', 'Getting Published', 'Writing Funding Proposals', and 'CVs and Job Applications'.
