The agent said I'm sending you
my decor agent - she will tell you
how to make your place look good.
She came, she saw, she uttered:
'clear all level surfaces, get rid of
most chairs, the china cabinets,
the CD stand, bookshelves and books.
It's all clutter. Prospective purchasers
want space for their imaginings.'
We sorted, wrapped, packed, boxed,
handed over to Mini Movers
half our beloved belongings.
The clearance! it doubled the size
of the house. The photographs show
wide spaces. Stripped for auction.
After which we move to a narrow
apartment, fewer rooms, fewer
shelves, very few books.
In February we will unpack
in sparseness. There I will live
in a small way a few years,
and after that somewhere
without reading matter, darker,
totally without clutter.
