I think a case can be made for that to be thought of as a set of gay
poem. I think ALT may have swung two ways, at least in his head
I don't know that the two situations compare. I can't see that
Tennyson could have envisaged aids.... and I read the poem as his way
of coping with his loss of Hallam in his situation.
The quote, as with so many, has been lifted out of context -- as in
the "As Shakespeare says" industry
I'm not sure the comparison works.
