With 43 sections and 14 Special interest Groups, The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) is the leading international body representing the interests of library and information services and their users. It is the global voice of the library and information profession and the 2012 World Library and
Information Congress (WLIC) in Helsinki was attended by over 3000 librarians from 120 countries.
Doug Knock, recipient of the 2012 CILIP first-timer award, and Maria Cotera, CILIP Trustee and IFLA activist, participated and represented CILIP at the IFLA WLIC in Helsinki. This informal will provide an insight into their experiences of IFLA as a first-timer and from the perspective of an experienced WLIC delegate.
Doug will provide an overview of his journey as a CILIP-funded first-timer, from preparing his application to writing the reports after the conference was over. He will reflect on his personal highlights, meeting librarians from every continent (except Antarctica), Finnish cuisine and hospitality and how it felt to give a paper at the World's largest gathering of librarians.
In 2004 Maria was the recipient of the CILIP first-timer award to attend the IFLA WLIC in Buenos Aires. In 2005 she was nominated to represent CILIP on the Women's Issues Section. She has since gone on to play a very active role in IFLA affairs, co-founding the Women, Information and Libraries Special Interest Group, which she convenes, and serving on the committee of the IFLA Management of Library Associations Section since 2007. Maria will give an insight into how IFLA works, how she has become involved and how CILIP's involvement in
IFLA benefits all of us.
ILIG will be inviting a number of other IFLA attendees to join us and hope that this Informal will prove particularly useful for anyone who is considering applying for the 2013 IFLA first-timer award to attend the IFLA WLIC in Singapore next year.

ILIG Informals are not lectures; they are informal, but informative, early evening meetings with a short talk on a theme of international interest plus plenty of time for questions and networking. They are open to all and absolutely free.
Light refreshments are served which is why we ask you to let ILIG know you are coming by booking online at
http://tinyurl.com/ILIGinformalOct12 by 8th October.
Thank you. We look forward to seeing you.
