Dear All,
At Queen Mary, we use a similar system: we file by using the last four digits of the barcode and also place the item spine down with no cover. We use coloured slips that help identify which items to remove from the shelf/shelves as items are placed for 48 hours (weekends excluded).
We also display clear guidance and an example with the self-collect items. It seems to be working well too.
Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require further information.
Kind regards,
Aqil

Hi,
At Teesside we file the reserved items by the using the first letter of the borrower's surname followed by their borrower number and place the item spine down with no cover. We display a sign giving clear guidance and an example with the self-collect items and it all seems to be working well.
Let me know if you need any more detail.
Julie

Do those who operate this system file the books by reader name, barcode number, or a combination?
We are worried that filing by name infringes data protection legislation, but think filing by student number or barcode might make them more difficult to find and lead to more flicking through the shelve looking for titles.
Also, do you use wrappers or not?
Chris
