Maximizing knowledge – sharing information conversationally through podcasts and social media, Tuesday 7 November 2012
Overview:
In Knowledge Management circles, much discussion continues on how to make available and share information and knowledge in the workplace for operational and business benefit. Helen Clegg will tell the story of how she and her team set out to solve part of the problem at A.T. Kearney, without a specific budget or indeed, initially, corporate authority. Five years ago, Helen, then working with Susan Montgomery (a founding member of the Aslib IRM Network, and its first chairperson) began to explore the possibility of creating a series of podcasts to share information and knowledge within the company. They wanted to challenge the status quo of knowledge transfer being synonymous only with documents. For them, a podcast was just as viable a channel for sharing knowledge as was a document, whatever its actual form or physical format. They decided to create their first edition on “Sourcing business travel”.
Today, the ATK podcast series numbers over 90 podcasts and attracts between 3000-4000 hits/month. ATK podcasts are now available on a number of external websites and syndicated through iTunes and YouTube. Discussions have started about exploiting podcast content even further, by turning selected podcasts into an e-book with a nominal price tag.
Innovation does indeed spur innovation, which is a welcome outcome, considering the humble starting point for this journey way back in 2007 without a budget. The project still continues to develop!
Learning objectives:
• To be innovative and imaginative in making use of what you already have
• To hear the story and learn about the experiences gained in the journey travelled
• To understand what is involved in sharing information and knowledge in contemporary ways.
