I'm a strong supporter of open access and of the means to achieve it; and
I find myself in agreement with much of what Steven Harnad has said about
recent policy declarations in the UK.
However, I'm in even stronger agreement with what Amber has said here.
Repositories, whatever their origins, are now used as a technological and
organisational solution to many different requirements, of which open access
to research literature is just one. Providing a forum for those who run
& develop repository systems to discuss technical issues is key and
it is what this list is for. If we lose those subscribers - and it is clear
that many have already been lost - we all suffer.
Keep the discussions separate. We effectively voted on this some years ago,
albeit in reference to a different (yet curiously similar) list.
I would also note that, until Amber's email, no one on either side of this
debate told any of us what the GOAL list was and how to subscribe to it.
Thanks for letting us know - I'm off to subscribe. Despite the fact that
I'm interested in both issues, I also like to manage the correspondence
about them separately.
