Hi Yasmin,

Welcome in the UK! Indeed, it is all very confusing, I came over from Germany, although some time ago, and found it confusing then, but it is worse now.

I suggest you write to the British Psychological Association and ask for their information on different practitioner work possibilities or go on their website.

I am working as an educatioal psychologist (now teaching at the Institute of Education) in London, so that is one possible path. You need to apply to a professional training course that lasts three years. If you would like more information I would be happy to meet up for a chat,

with kind regards,

Dr. Greta Sykes
Academic and Professional Tutor
Educational, Child and Adolescent Psychology
Institute of Education
London

Subject: Re: [COMMUNITYPSYCHUK] new member

Hi Everyone,

I am also a new member and thought to use your message as an opportunity to ask some general questions.
I am studying Psychology from a German Distance Learning University and am in my second semester. I already have a BA degree in German language & literature studies and Oriental studies, which I completed in Germany before moving to London around 3 years ago.

So I am actually new in the field of Psychology and have to admit that it is quite confusing sometimes to understand the system of the "psychological" job market here in the UK.
In Germany these things are very different and I am still trying to figure out, how to actually becoming a professional, practical Psychologist once I finished my studies.
I do see a lot of people here, specially newly Graduates, that have to work in all kinds of job fields which mostly are not even close to what they studied.

I am really worried that the same will happen to me. It already did actually with my first degree so that's why I really want to try to do my best to get a job one day that I really like!
Therefore, I would like to ask some questions general questions I have about how to start a career as a Psychologist:

1. What is the next step after finishing my MSc? (I know its a long way to go still but I simply like planning ahead ;-) )
I read somewhere that I need to do a Traineeship. I tried to search for trainee positions but did not really find anything. Is there a specific point of contact, any website, organisation who can help with that?

2. What are the regulations for becoming a Psychotherapist here in the UK? In Germany a clinical Master is required in order to then take on additional training to become a Psychotherapist (My University does not offer clinical psychology that's why I am asking)

3. How- and where- is it possible to find an internship?? I asked about that in a different thread already but wanted to mention it again with the hopes of some more helpful hints. I contacted some clinics, organisations, department already but they all told me that they are not able to take interns. I just wonder sometimes how employers expect Graduates to already have experience when no one is willing to give it to them. Ya I know about the volunteering thing but I seriously cannot afford to work for free as I am not getting any financial support- and literally dont have any free time due to full-time studies and full time work.
I think this is a really upsetting development in the job market and makes a university degree look like it is worthless.

But I guess that's nothing we can change. I am sorry if I asked any stupid questions but it is really hard to understand how things are working here...might be because I am not a local :-)

So I would be really happy if there was someone who could give me a few hints, tips and tricks or simply ease my worries in any way.
I am thankful for any response and hope no one minds to be bothered by a beginner like me!

Wishing everyone a lovely weekend!

Regards,

Yasmin
