Dear Colleagues,
The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) is conducting a consultation on the
Shortage Occupation Lists for the UK and Scotland. The list includes
specific science and engineering jobs including Biological scientists,
biochemists and medical practitioners. The full list can be found here:
http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/documents/workingintheuk/short
ageoccupationlistnov11.pdf
MAC is reviewing the shortage occupation list, and asking for evidence on
what further occupations should be included, based on their 'Skill,
Shortage, Sensible' Criteria:
* is the individual occupation or job title sufficiently skilled to
be included on the list;
* is there a shortage of labour within each skilled occupation or
job title sufficient to merit inclusion or retention on the list;
* is it sensible for immigrant labour from outside the EEA to be
used to fill this shortage.
They are also reviewing the time period that an occupation remains on the
list. The government currently proposes a two year period, to reflect the
fact that inclusion on the list is intended to provide temporary relief.
This may not be long enough for some highly skilled Science and Engineering
jobs. MAC is asking for views on this 'Sunset Clause', and its likely
business impacts.
Please find the full consultation document here:
http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/documents/aboutus/workingwithu
s/mac/uk-scotland-creative-occ.pdf and a summary of the relevant questions
attached.
If you have any views on the shortage occupation list or the sunset clause,
and how this may impact the biosciences sector, please return them to
