The papers in this panel will discuss Shia Muslim material culture as a voice in public space. Public spaces engage people in social relations and are here investigated as material and visually constituted fields of communication and performance. Based on case studies analyzing public space as material landscapes, the papers explore how material objects and practices express, enact, mediate and contest religious belief and values. The language of public discourse is often less important than the manner in which it is conducted. Interlocutors find expression in embodied behaviour and the importance of words is shaped by the tone of the voice, the look in the eye, and the gesture of the hand. The papers draw on this insight to explore sensuous and experiential aspects of material religion to discuss relationships between belief, materiality, sensation, public participation and social relations. Acknowledging the plural and fluctuation nature of public space and public discourses, the papers examine how material religion as a voice of special group is shaped and conveyed with sensitivity to local cultural and societal context, and how Shia believers respond to, engage with, and are shaped by surrounding public discourses. One important aspect is how a particular materialized voice invites or excludes other voices in the public sphere, thus expanding or narrowing the public space and its discourses.
