Medical Statistician
Ref: 1287920
UCL Department / Division: Cancer Institute / Cancer Research UK & UCL Cancer Trials Centre
Grade: 6 or 7
Hours: Full Time
Salary (inclusive of London allowance): Grade 6: £25,927- £30,384 per annum
Grade 7: £32,055-£38,744 per annum
Duties and Responsibilities
We are looking to appoint this post at either UCL Grade 6 or 7; Grade 7 for someone with significant experience of Medical Statistics or a closely related subject, ideally in clinical trials or at Grade 6 for someone with less experience in Medical Statistics or a closely related subject (e.g. a recent postgraduate). There are therefore 2 separate job descriptions; one for the Grade 7 post and one for the Grade 6 post.
The post will be offered at the Grade considered appropriate for the successful candidate.
The post is funded for 1 year in the first instance, but is part of a 5-year core grant being renewed in Autumn 2013.
The Cancer Research UK and UCL Cancer Trials Centre (CTC) is one of the nine cancer trials units in the UK accredited by the National Cancer Research Institute (NCRI). The main cancers being investigated are lung, breast, colorectal, head and neck, gynaecological, gastro-intestinal and lymphoma. Most of the trials are multi-centre phase I/II or III trials using survival, tumour response or quality of life as endpoints. CTC statisticians also conduct systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
There are currently six statisticians in the CTC, at different levels of experience. The trial statistician is an essential member of the Trial Management Team, contributing to the definition of the research question, the design of the trial, the submission of grant proposals to funding bodies and the writing of papers for publication. He/she undertakes all the statistical analyses and has responsibility for the confidential reports to the Data Monitoring and Ethics Committee. All the CTC statisticians are encouraged to attend further training courses of interest, including national or international conferences, as part of their own professional education. They can also develop their own research interests.
The main purpose of this post is to support on-going local and national clinical trials, and help develop new ones, by working with the statisticians, clinical investigators and other trial centre staff. This will include involvement in the design, liaison with trial staff during trial recruitment and statistical analyses of the trials and the writing of reports and papers for publication.
The post holder will be encouraged to learn more about the administrative processes of trial conduct and data management, including trial set up procedures and the UK regulations on clinical trials. After one year, the post holder can consider whether to undertake a part-time PhD, related to cancer trials, and fees will be met by the CTC (this offer applies to both Grade 6 & Grade 7 posts).
Key Requirements
The successful candidate must have a high level knowledge of Medical Statistics or related subject. Knowledge of statistical methods of design and analysis in medical research are essential, and some practical experience in clinical trials and/or epidemiological studies would be advantageous.
