I think it comes down to the nature of the request. I have also seen
acceptable endorsements.
But you probably have to pitch it right. and it may depend on the area of
the research.
I realise that REF might be wandering away from PSCI territory. I mention it
because I have been trying to get the academics to use public engagement to
carefully support their submissions. If HEFCE continues to require "impact"
evidence, then perhaps universities will pay a little more attention to
using public engagement to create some of that impact.

Luckily, in the cases I've looked at, they have managed to get these
sort of endorsements.

I was talking yesterday to someone who once ran a Research Council and
who still has good contacts with universities. He reported that
academics are having some difficulty in persuading companies to endorse
claims of the impact of research.
Q - "Can you say that this work delivered a 10 per cent improvement in
efficiency?"
A - "You must be joking. You'll want a share of the profits."
Anecdotal, I know, but almost certainly representative of the sort of
challenges that REF faces.

Businesses might have some interesting insights, they are used to trying
to quantify the impact of PR, events and sponsorship type stuff. Maybe
one of the sponsorship agencies or PR companies will have something
useful to contribute? Though I think they struggle as much as you.

Hi Richard
It's well worth having a look at the resources that Paul mentions in his

useful in supporting researchers when they're preparing Impact Case
Studies.
In short, I don't think there are easy solutions to your challenge of
evidencing significance, but I've found these resources are a helpful
place to start.

Hi
That's v interesting. Could you briefly outline what kind of evidence
could be used in the REF to provide evidence about the impact of talks,
popular books and science festivals? Reach is easy but significance
seems v tricky to me.
Thanks

Dear all
The NCCPE has taken a careful interest in the development of the
REF, and the potential to include 'public engagement' activities within
it - so we've followed the recent emails with great interest!
There are a host of REF-related resources
<http://www.publicengagement.ac.uk/how-we-help/event-reports/ref-worksho
p> on our website, including:
* A discussion paper
g%20from%20Public%20Engagement%20Discussion%20Paper.pdf> which we were
invited to draft for the REF team and panels to inform the final
guidance (2011)
* A summary
g%20from%20Public%20Engagement%20Discussion%20Paper.pdf> of the final
impact guidance, highlighting how it treats public engagement (February
2012)
* We have also developed a workshop to help researchers
and research managers with the creation of good impact case studies,
which explores briefly how you can evidence impact from engagement. We
are running this workshop again in Bristol on 16th January
<http://www.publicengagement.ac.uk/news-and-events/events/creating-impac
t-case-studies-ref-16th-january-2013> , targeting people who would like
to run it themselves back in their own institutions. We also run
workshops on evaluation (a beginners' guide and masterclass) which look
in more detail at the challenges of evidencing impact from engagement.
* Impact and public engagement will also feature
prominently at our forthcoming Engage 2012
<http://www.publicengagement.ac.uk/news-and-events/events/engage-2012-re
sponding-change> conference in December, with two workshops exploring
the topic.
A few points in response to the discussion over the last few
days:
* The REF assess research excellence - not excellent
engagement. As such, it provides some opportunities to include PE, but
it is vital that we continue to press for the value of PE outside the
rather narrow confines of impact;
* While the main focus needs to be on the 'impacts'
generated for the 'beneficiaries', the invitation is also there to
evidence how dialogue with publics / beneficiaries has made a
demonstrable contribution to the relevance, focus and significance of
the research itself - a 'virtuous circle';
* Units are also expected to produce an 'impact
template' which outlines their strategic approach to generating impact
as a department. This provides another opportunity to articulate how
engagement with the public and other 'users' of research has
demonstrably influenced the research agenda of the department. It is
also where they can detail how they support their staff and post docs to
develop their skills and expertise in engagement. The Concordat for
Engaging the Public with Research (and the NCCPE's self-assessment tools
<http://www.publicengagement.ac.uk/support> ) provide a useful starting
point for framing this narrative.
Hope this helps!
