Looks like universities are going to be very different in their submissions.
Those that I have worked on, again nameless for confidentiality reasons, do
not fall into any particular mould. They mix PEST, business, influence on
policy and so on.
That is what you would expect. Not all research is likely to influence
policy, or to get taken up by industry. But to omit public engagement seems
to be to be lunacy. Many of the other impacts are harder to achieve if you
don't have this one under your belt.

Hi Richard,
I am involved in some REF impact case studies and from the examples I've
seen, no mention of PUS is included. The impact detailed is all about
the direct impact the research has had on processes, the environment,
cost etc. (I can't go into detail for confidentiality reasons) and I've
seen nothing about PUS.

Subject: [PSCI-COM] The impact of impact
Hi
As some of you may know, all UK academics will soon be evaluated in a
government exercise known as the REF. A key of the exercise involves
assessing the 'impact' of their research, and this includes public
understanding and engagement projects.
However, it is vital that all submitted impacts (including giving a
talk, helping with an exhibition, appearing on the media, or writing a
popular book) must be accompanied by documented evidence that the work
has directly informed the public or changed their attitudes/beliefs.
Has anyone in the PUS community been dealing with this issue (e.g., what
evidence is and isn't acceptable, how that evidence is collected)?
One important implication is that academics will be v reluctant to be
involved in future PUS work unless it explicitly results in this kind of
evidence.
Cheers
