Hi Louisa,
We trained the UKRC's Ingenious Women Engineers group, 19 women selected
because of their potential as science communicators to go out to schools and
other groups to enthuse women about careers in engineering.
Our training had great feedback from the UKRC, recorded as "raising both
confidence and competence" in the group.
We work with a former BBC voice coach as well as offering new communications
and presentation sessions with science role models who make frequent
appearances on TV, sharing their tips and experiences. We will be working
with Dr. Maggie Aderin-Pocock MBE amongst others.
We use video and playback and draw on our 25 years in international award
winning science TV production to coach our delegates to give their best and
most engaging performance to any audience.
Let me know if we can help. We try to work to a range of budgets!
Best wishes,
Barbara

Louisa,
I suggest you contact your local STEM Ambassador contract holder in
Cambridgeshire. They should be able to help you out with training, CRB,
etc.

Subject: [PSCI-COM] Supporting researchers in engagement
Dear all,
I'm hoping you can share some best practice with equipping researchers for
outreach purposes. We're looking at both encouraging our researchers to
become more involved with outreach and also provide training support to
demonstrate that we're committed to enhancing their skills, as well as
making them better communicators. To do this we're thinking of creating
different semi-formal training routes - matched to people's interests and
the sort of outreach they want to do (writing content, talking to people,
taking tours, acting as media spokespeople etc).
Do any of you do this, provide prescribed or recommended training for your
researchers working in outreach, and how do you do it? What's the uptake
like, do people feel supported and positive about it or does it put them
off? Any thoughts?
Thanks for your input,
Louisa
