Hi Antonia and others,
An interesting question and great discussion. This is very timely for me, as I am about to embark on a residency in an artist community in Berlin, studying artist communities in Berlin (inspired in part by some of the work that Ian describes so nicely in his response). So, I am both participating in a residency and also engaging in the study of temporary and permanent artist communities (one of them is an artist residency community) at the same time. The residency that I received is a pretty flexible one, one that is open to artists and writers with an refreshingly encompassing attitude about accepting a wide range of people. My proposed work is collaborative with my artist husband, so perhaps that makes it a bit more palatable to the art world.
All of the artists that I have contacted about being the subject of archaeological study have been very receptive so far, for what its worth, including some that have taken archaeology as a subject of their art.
Very interested to hear more about this…
Carolyn

Subject: archaeological residencies
Hi there
Although there are now many examples of residencies by artists in archaeological environments, I was wondering if list members know of any archaeological 'residencies' in contemporary art environments (whether festival, studio, gallery, street etc)? What form did / could these take? What made them specifically archaeological? What were the outcomes? Thanks everyone!
Cheers, Antonia
