A sad loss but what a legacy.
Best regards. Mark Gilman.

Rowdy
Thank you for telling us the sad news. It was a privilege to meet Griff last year and I am really pleased many Phoenix staff got to see the man who started it all.

He was an incredibly humble man and I think unaware of how instrumental he has been in helping some of the most vulnerable people in our society get the help they need. His influence goes out with the sector but we have him to thank for our very existence.

He was incredibly frail last October but was delighted to receive the award from Eftc.

Our thoughts go to his wife Sue who provided him with so much care in later life.

Subject: [EFTC] Griffith Edwards

Dear Colleagues

I just received the very sad news that Griffith Edwards has died peacefully in his sleep. Family members were with him at the last. He had never really recovered from a stroke he had some weeks ago.

It doesn't need me to tell you that Griff was a major figure in the addiction field generally and in the growth of therapeutic communities in particular. It was Griff who urged Iain Christie to visit Daytop - a visit which resulted in the establishment of Alpha House, the first TC in Europe. It was Griff too who set up Phoenix House in London the original Phoenix Futures project.

Last year Griff was awarded the EFTC Award at our conference in Oxford - an award which he accepted with a speech which was acute, witty and very moving.

We will all miss his wisdom and humanity. As a young ex-addict just starting in the field 40 years ago I found him a huge support. He was incredibly supportive of the work we were doing and was always happy to give of his time and wisdom.

When the definitive history of the field is written Griff will probably have (at least) a chapter to himself.
