There are, generally, two good reasons for short URLs:
1) It's easier for someone to type it into the address bar (less chance
of a typo)
2) By using unique URLs, one can track promotion (if they come via url1,
it's promotion A; if they come via url2, it's promotion B)
The downside to short URLs is that you quickly run out of "sensible"
strings, and some address just don't shorten well: "Department of
Mathematics" v's "International School of Mathematics" v's "Institute of
Scholarly Mentoring"
