Dear All
Apologies I forgot to include the URL to the forthcoming book which contains the chapter on RDM. It is Pickard, A. Research methods in Information at http://www.facetpublishing.co.uk/title.php?id=8132&category_code=

Subject: DATUM in Action RDM planning projects outputs
Dear Colleagues
The final outputs from the DATUM in Action project, funded by JISC in 2011-12, are now all up on the website (www.northumbria.ac.uk/datum).
The project focused on 'making Data Management Planning work' and involved working with researchers on an EU FP7 staff exchange project to help them define and implement good RDM practice by developing an appropriate DMP and supporting systems, and evaluating their initial implementation. The outputs include:
* The final project report
* A DMP template, with guidance for its completion, and an example
of a completed DMP
* A set of guidance aimed at research staff on:
- RDM roles and responsibilities
- Folder structure and file naming
- Metadata
- Information security
* A presentation on how the open source version control software
'Bazaar' could be used by researchers to manage research data from any discipline
We have also written a chapter on RDM for the 2nd edition of a colleagues book on research methods ( ) which is an introduction to RDM for information management students and practitioners about to conduct research, but which would be useful to other students and professionals.
It includes some activities with answers which will appear on the DATUM website once the book has been published later this year.
The work we've done has informed the Northumbria University's response to EPSRC's requirement for a data management road map and is feeding into other work on data management involving our research support services.
The project team was:
* RDM Project
Prof Julie McLeod, School of Computing, Engineering & Information Sciences
Sue Childs, School of Computing, Engineering & Information Sciences
Elizabeth Lomas, School of Computing, Engineering & Information Sciences
* EU Project
Prof Maia Angelova, School of Computing, Engineering & Information Sciences
Dr Jeremy Ellman, School of Computing, Engineering & Information Sciences
Prof Glenda Cook, School of Community, Health & Education Studies
Prof Tony Hildreth, School of Community, Health & Education Studies
We'd be happy to receive comments on any on the outputs and hear from anyone who uses them as they are or in a modified way. They are of course freely available under a Creative Commons licence.
Regards,
Julie

Future Citations Hack Days, on September 27 and 28, 2012 in Birmingham, UK is a FREE event (includes accommodation and food) for software developers and experts who are interested in the area of Citation Data.
More information about the event (including an application form) can be found here:
http://goo.gl/z9sVo
This event has been organised by the Developer Community Supporting Innovation Project (DevCSI-http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk) and the JISC Citation Data directions project. It will bring together software developers, project managers, and experts in the area of Citation Data Analysis, areas of interest include:
- Business Intelligence
- Research management
- Novel use cases
We will help people come together to form small teams/groups (these can be formed before the event), to discuss issues, work on paper/real prototypes, datasets, APIs. All participants will be able to share their own examples, expertise and opinions via the lightning sessions, discussions and informal networking opportunities.
The event will culminate in a series of presentations from the teams, in terms of the work they have carried out.
Please visit the Future Citation Data ideas page:

for the ideas people are interested in (at the moment it is blank!)
If you can't make it, please feel free to pass on the details you know who might benefit from it.

Subject: Research Data Management Projects in the JISC Transformations Programme
The JISC Transformations Programme (http://www.jisc.ac.uk/whatwedo/programmes/transformations.aspx) aims to support institutions achieve large scale change in a number of areas by supporting the deployment of JISC and non-JISC resources. In Strand B (http://www.jisc.ac.uk/whatwedo/programmes/transformations/strandb.aspx), which is concerned with improved efficiency and/or cost savings in meeting institutional missions there are two projects concerned with supporting better management of research data.
The two projects, at York and at Leicester, are using outputs from the JISC Managing Research Data programme and elsewhere. Both projects have blogs which are linked below; their work is likely to be of interest to subscribers to this list:
University of York, Tools for RDM Development: http://uoy-rdmproject.blogspot.co.uk/
University of Leicester, RDM Support Service: http://amburnham.jiscinvolve.org/wp/
Best wishes,
Simon.
