A PHD IN SOLAR SYSTEM SCIENCE - ABERYSTWYTH UNIVERSITY
At short notice (deadline 20/9/2012), a remaining STFC funded PhD is
available at the Institute of Mathematics and Physics, starting 1st October 2012.
This involves the simulation and study of glass on Mars, or the study of small
scale erosional /depositional processes on the Moon.
The glass related project will utilize the latest state of the art
radiometric colour calibration, close range 3D mapping, and glass and crystal
centre analysis techniques applied to Mars exploration imagery. Remotely sensed
measurements of candidate martian glass will then be compared to Earth-based
simulated glass.
The lunar project will involve either: (1) modelling of charged dust
particle motion and distribution around lunar topography in the terminator
region under different solar wind, and illumination conditions, or (2) the
automated comparison of images taken many years apart to look for surface
small scale changes e.g. new craters, slope disturbances etc.
Candidates should have a 2.1, or above, in a Physics, Geology, or Chemistry
related BSc. A good knowledge of programming, or computer modelling, or
remote sensing, would be advantageous. General eligibility conditions and
stipend details are described in the STFC student handbook:
