Hi Lorraine,
I think it would also be worth mentioning Future Morph here.
In case you are unaware of it, Future Morph (http://www.futuremorph.org/) is the Science Council’s website designed to provide information for young people aged 11-19, their parents and teachers about careers available from studying science and maths, and to redefine their perceptions about careers arising from these subjects.
The site originally launched towards the end of 2008, with the initial design and development process including workshops with schools and students, which raised exactly the types of questions that you ask below. Content was then developed working with our member organizations and others in order to answer these questions in an engaging and informative way that could be displayed within the website and appeal to students. One of the main benefits of the site is also due to the fact that it links to other online sources of STEM information within education and employment, with the potential to raise students' interest in STEM before guiding them elsewhere for more detailed information.
The site re-launched on Monday of this week with a new-look and design to give the site a fresh feel. Again, student and school focus groups were carried out during the design process to ensure that we were still meeting the needs of our target audience and to find out what would encourage young people to take up a career in STEM, who the key influencers were, and what the deciding factors were, etc.
Please do contact me off-list if you would like any further information.
Best wishes,
Holly.

Subject: [PSCI-COM] Why STEM? Young people's career film
Dear all,
We (Durham University and NETPark) have been working with a fantastic group of young people from Framwellgate School, Durham who’ve produced a short film about careers in STEM – a film for young people, by young people. Several organisations have been involved in interviews and content and we hope to have the final version ready soon.
One of the things that they’d like to do is to have a website for the film with some background info & the question of “why STEM?” has come up. We’d like to have quotes about what inspires people about STEM, why they’ve pursued a career in STEM, why it’s important, what they love about it. Big questions!
It would be amazing if you’d be happy to share your thoughts on this as quotes that we could use on the website. Or perhaps quotes from others that inspire you. Please email me off list ([log in to unmask]) with your quote and confirm that you’d be happy for us to use it on our website.
So….why STEM?
What inspires you about STEM?
Why have you pursued a career in STEM?
What do you love about STEM?
Why is STEM important?
Many thanks,
Lorraine
