Stephen, et al.
Athabasca University uses OER in its courses that are closed and behind our firewall. We are non-profit. A teacher in a classroom who uses OER is doing so behind a real wall not a digital one. So, your NC license does not stop us from closing off the OER. Although Steve F. is correct there is nothing to stop people from taking the same content from somewhere else, even though our instance of it is closed.
I would think that if an OER is Share Alike then we would still be able to close it in our course but would have to also have an instance in an open website. But where does that leave the teacher who uses a sharealike CC in her/his classroom?
All the best.

Seriously? We're not talking about something that can be stolen, since there's no issue of scarcity. The worst this can be is copyright infringement (assuming one even accepts the legitimacy of that in the first place).

Yes they do, unless you're infringing on others' rights in the process -- or unless you're simply ideologically opposed to profit.
<< There are many legitimate ways to make a living using OERs without enclosing OERs in a paywall and charging people a dollar just to see them. >>
It seems like it wouldn't be a very successful way to make money anyway. It's not like whatever copy of the information is only available from one provider, that's the whole point. So what if Evilcorp, Ltd. has it behind a paywall, you can simply get it freely from Heroic NGO, and Evilcorp can do nothing about it.
