My understanding is that you can have an anonymous conversation as much as you like but as soon as it becomes apparent who is being spoken about you have to say anything further must be noted on record. So you can encourage them to avoid names until they want to go the record. The value of this is so you can tell them what you need to know officially
The issue, as I see it, is that you cannot 'unknow' what you have been told and this will impact on your interaction with the employee, what action you can take or advise the organisation to take and if you cannot act upon it you might as well not know it.
