Subject: Re: [OCC-HEALTH] work environment - new facilities
Good Morning
Thank you for all your comments. I decided that this was a situation which required sensitivity as the new premises were sesigned by the engineering department and senior manager. So at the weekend I emailed the people concerned....
Good Morning
''xxx showed me the new facilities yesterday. I was very impressed it is good to see such a light and beautiful area where staff can relax and have some decent food. A vast improvement on the other canteen! Brilliant engineering!
There has obviously been a lot of hard work , thought and money gone into the project.
The changing facilities were sparkling and I am sure will be much easier to keep clean.
However I am concerned regarding the bench height and width and feel as my role of occupational health adviser I must comment before the process goes live.
I am of average height and like to consider myself fit for my age. I had difficulty climbing onto the bench and if I had to undertake the process regularly it would definitely put pressure on my back.
During my 18 months at Spalding I have reviewed a lot of employees who are small in stature and have various disabilities. I am certain that these people will not be able to manage the activity easily and in some cases not at all. One lady to my knowledge has a hip replacement. The angle between knee and body should not be less than 90% in any activity or the hip joint is likely to pop out. This is the case for all people with a prosthetic hip. Others have back, knee, cardiac and weight issues.
It is usual to rehabilitate people after sickness or injury . I am concerned how people with skeletal or muscular issues will be phased back to work when they are not able to even enter the building safely.
There is the potential issue of discrimination against disabled( Equality Act 2010 ). The HSE puts huge emphasis on good economic design especially in 2012 . Has anyone thought of emergency exit procedures for fire or medical emergencies??
I am happy to discuss this further with you and have only highlighted a few issues on my email.
Obviously the decision to make any changes is for the business but knowing how committed you are in ensuring your employees are working in a comfortable environment I thought you should be aware.''
I have not had a reply however today I have heard as a result of my concerns a meeting is being held and the chief engeneer has advised me that yes changes are required and that they will be done! So watch this space.
If I can I will upload pictures later.
