FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT
IAU Symposium 297
The Diffuse Interstellar Bands
20-24 May 2013
Noordwijkerhout, The Netherlands
URL: www.iau297.nl
Dear Colleagues,
This is the first announcement for the 297th Symposium of the
International Astronomical Union (IAU), "The Diffuse Interstellar
Bands". This conference will bring together researchers in
observational astronomy, laboratory astrophysics, molecular
spectroscopy and interstellar chemistry to discuss the long standing
problem associated with the identification of the diffuse interstellar
bands. The goal of this meeting is to provide a timely report on the
current status on the identification of the DIB carriers from the
perspectives of the different fields; to encourage renewed and focused
research efforts; and to outline a road map for DIB research in the
next decade.
We plan for a balanced meeting with several invited talks about key
topics, a fair number of contributed talks, a poster session and ample
time for discussion.
Topics will include:
- Overall properties of the diffuse interstellar bands
- DIB profiles, correlations & families
- DIBs and the relation to their environment, other interstellar
components and astronomical phenomena.
- Laboratory Astrophysics studies of proposed DIB carrier candidates.
- Theoretical and computational (astro)chemistry
- Properties and critique of the most promising DIB carrier
candidates.
- Future directions in DIB research: toward a road map for DIB
identification.
The meeting will be held at conference center Leeuwenhorst in
Noordwijkerhout, the Netherlands. Noordwijkerhout is located about 20
minutes by car from Amsterdam and Leiden, and is next to Noordwijk,
close to the Dutch coastline.
Registration will open on 10 September 2012. There will be a hard
limit of 150 attendees for the symposium, on a first-come, first-serve
basis. Check http://www.iau297.nl for details on how to register.
Financial Assistance
In keeping with the spirit of the IAU Symposia, the costs of the
meeting will be kept as low as possible. In addition, financial
assistance in the form of IAU Support Grants is available for those
needing financial assistance to attend.
