Dear colleagues,
Please see below for details of a one day-symposium, 'Mapping the New
Molecular Landscape: Social and Ethical Aspects of Epigenetics'. This
event, supported through a Wellcome Trust Strategic Programme, will
take place at the University of Edinburgh on the 24th September 2012.
The aim of the symposium is to bring together social scientists and
bioethicists with an established interest in issues related to
epigenetics, in order to explore what some of the key social and
ethical issues currently seem to be, and what - based on the history
of molecular genetics - we might justifiably expect to see emerge in
the future. At the same time, the event will act as a forum within
which participants can critically examine how we might engage with
normative concerns that are located in the future rather than the
present. In essence, how can we 'do' anticipatory ethics?
Speakers:
Dr Jörg Niewöhner (Humboldt University): 'Social and Ethical Aspects
of an Emerging Molecular Biology of Social Difference and Change'.
Professor Paul Martin (University of Sheffield): '"A Central Issue in
Biology": Epigenetics, Development and the (re)Making of Molecular
Medicine'.
Dr Ilina Singh (LSE): 'Plasticity, Epigenetics and Early Intervention:
Thinking in Cases'.
Registration is from 11.00, with talks concluding at 17.15. There will
be a wine reception from 17.30-19.30.
There is no charge for the event, and lunch, refreshments and a wine
reception will be provided. In general, we are not able to cover
travel expenses (though we do have a very small pot of funds left to
help support early career researchers to attend).
This is a final call for participation since limited places remain.
If you would like to attend, please email me at:
[log in to unmask] Please also let me know if you have any
dietary, access or other requirements. Many thanks. A symposium report
will be available after the event.
All best wishes,
Martyn
