italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Dear colleagues,
I've often been enlightened (and sometimes bemused) by the range of topics that get included under Italian Studies. But a living discipline has room for many approaches, and many levels of interest. All of us, even the most traditional and erudite, have a great deal to learn from each other, and we can always disregard what doesn't happen to interest us. Personally, I find the list enormously useful and stimulating because of its welcoming and inclusive character. Of course one tends to value certain things more than others, and to wish one had time to get involved in some of the events and debates. "He who is good with a hammer thinks everything is a nail" -- but a good web list should be like Dr Azzecca-Garbugli's vision of judgment: "Non se ne scappa: ci son tutti: è come la valle di Giosafat..."

Dear colleagues,
The state of conferences overall is rather sad recently- it is difficult to find funding for travel, and therefore also to recruit colleagues to participate. I would argue that the "happy few" phenomenon is rarer when conferences and conference sessions can be publicized through email lists, and I would urge the list directors to not edit calls for papers. The internet phenomenon has been allowing colleagues and fellow researchers who would have never found each other personally (especially in more isolated areas of research and from smaller institutions with few faculty who do research) to meet and to share ideas and research in a way that was not possibly before.
If a reader is not interested in the topic, there is a "delete" button and there are also email filters.
Thank you to the organizers for providing this valuable service.

Cari Colleghi,
Molto cordialmente,
