Spoken languages in written texts in early modern Italy
Clare College, University of Cambridge
Latimer Room
Friday 26 October 2012, 14:00-17:30
This is one of a series of events, funded by the European Research Council and organized by the Italian Voices project in the University of Leeds (http://arts.leeds.ac.uk/italianvoices/), that explore oral culture in its relation to the written word in Italy between about 1450 and 1700. Questions to be considered include: What is the relationship between written texts from different genres and spoken language? How does this relationship differ according whether the texts are supposed to be read or, at least in principle, performed? How were different types of written language meant to be realized in speech and how should they be pronounced now? How does women’s participation in oral culture differ from that of men and how is their use of linguistic varieties represented? What cultural significances are attached to the representation of spoken languages in written texts?
Speakers:
Giulio Lepschy (University College London): ‘Spoken’ and ‘written’ in sixteenth-century Venice: Bembo, Sanudo, Veniexiana
Helena Sanson (University of Cambridge): ‘Femina proterva, rude, indocta [...], chi t’ha insegnato a parlar in questo modo?’ Women’s ‘voices’ and linguistic varieties in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century written texts
