Considering myself a historian of language teaching & learning and of applied linguistic ideas and practices but not really of linguistics I am (i) happy for us to maintain our association with Henry Sweet, who can serve as an appropriate figurehead in all these fields, and (ii) not happy to think the HSS's remit might be (in my view) shrunk to just the 'history of linguistics'. With my own interests - and in consideration of the potential I think might exist to increase the Society's membership among historians of language teaching and those (e.g. applied linguists) with a developing interest in the history/pre-history of applied linguistics but not necessarily that of linguistics 'proper', I would most favour adding 'practices' to 'ideas' - i.e. 'Henry Sweet Society for the history of linguistic ideas and practices' or (better?) 'Henry Sweet Society for the history of linguistic practices and ideas' but recognize these may seem too long/controversial, in which case I would vote for no change!
