Dear Colleagues,
Changes in strain can be quite substantial for structures undergoing shrinkage
and seasonal movements sometimes more than the load the structure is intended
to carry (Burland 2006). Expansion and contraction joints on bridges and other
structures have not shown their full reliability. Shrinkage and swelling soils such
clays have known to cause damage to foundations particularly with shallow
foundations. Are we working with inaccurate models that give us results which
make no real sense?
