Hi Christine,
I have just had NHS ethical approval for an ethnographic research as part
of my PhD in a psychiattic hospital in the uk, it took 10 months, 30
e-pages, as many appendixes , lots of emails and letters. There are real
drawbacks to a one size fits all bureaucratic system that make issues of
confidentiality overide any other concerns sepcific to the study and
consider consent as a one off event.
Nevertheless my application was approved without major changes to my
proposal and so i am looking forward to start in the next month or so.
If there is enough interest for a seminar I would be interested to discuss
these issues, as I am sure I will encounter ethical dilemnas that have not
been addressed by the REC.
