I am not so familiar with earlier c compilers. Good old c99 (old enough for
me) always worked for me and that was enough. Please feel free to let me
know if you notice any other compatibility issues.

Just a comment that c89 allows variables to be declared at the start of a
block so you don't need to change lines like
if (blah) {
size_t xxx;
}
to have xxx declared right at the top. The c99/C++ issue comes up when you
do
blah;
blah;
size_t xxx;
blah;
