pig n. 1. I. 16.
A device that fits inside an oil or gas pipeline and can be
sent through it to clean or inspect the inside, or to act as
a barrier between fluids either side of it.
1949 Amer. Speech 24 33 A few field workers apply the term
[sc. ‘rabbit’] to scrapers used in pipelines to remove
paraffin, but the most common name for this device is pig,
because of the grunting noise it makes as it is forced
through the line.
