Dear Victoria,

Speaking as a herbalist and historian who regularly
stores & displays herbal preparations ... The tinctures will almost
certainly be simple alcohol based extracts: These are relatively stable
preparations on the whole, and not an issue in terms of Health and
Safety (unless they are more than 50% alcohol and there's a substantial
quantity of liquid left in which case you might want to consider their
flammable nature - the containers should mitigate this, however). The
only possible exceptions are the Arnica which is a schedule three herb
(poisonous), and also the 'poisonous' lotion - legally the former needs
to be kept in an inaccessible, locked container/ display, can't advise
on the second without knowing what it contains - no more dangerous than
a scalpel, of course! 'Aknilea' sounds like it might be Achilea
(Achilea millefolium, or Yarrow).

Sounds a really fascinating lot of
material!

all the best, Bruna Gushurst-Moore, MNIMH

>Dear all,
>
>I'm writing in the
hope of some advice. I'm currently working on our
collections/documentation backlog and have come across a number of
bottles from a dispensing chemist in the store. Each bottle contains a
small amount of liquid. According to the entry form they were bought
from an antiques shop about 15 years ago for accessioning into the
collection, although as yet they haven't been. Before I do accession
them I thought I'd check whether there are any guidelines or
restrictions around adding such items to museum collections.
