Call for Papers
Association of American Geographers (AAG) Annual Meeting 2013, Los Angeles April 9-13th.
Session Title: Historical Mobilities and Gender
Session organisers: Dydia DeLyser (Louisiana State University) and Sarah Evans (University of the West of England).
The recent mobilities turn across the social sciences (Sheller and Urry 2006; Hannam 2006) has been of particular interest to geographers (Cresswell and Merriman 2010). Whilst attention has largely focused on contemporary mobilities, reconstructing and understanding historical mobilities has also been of central importance to the mobilities turn (Cresswell 2006, 2010; DeLyser 2010), as has exploring the intersection between mobilities and social power differentials such as gender (Uteng and Cresswell 2008).
In this session we would like to explore the intersections between historical mobilities and gender, understanding mobilities in a broad sense. Possible mobilities could be forms of historical transportation; urban mobilities; the mobilities of ideas and forms of knowledge production and reception; and so on. Although we are primarily interested in the intersections between historical mobilities and gender, we are also open to papers exploring the intersections between historical mobilities and other social axes of difference such as race, class, or sexuality. Papers from early career researchers are particularly welcome.
Please submit abstracts to Sarah Evans ([log in to unmask]) and Dydia DeLyser ([log in to unmask]) by October 1st.
