Hello all,
We've recently been offered a Russian plasma scalpel device here at the Thackray, but due to space restrictions we cannot accept it. The donor has asked me to circulate information to members of UKMCG to see if a good home can be found for it. Below are the details of the original email which was sent to us, please contact Elise on the details at the bottom if you are interested -
Dear Curator
Professor Primrose has asked me to contact you to offer a very unique and interesting piece of equipment for the museum. The equipment was imported from Russia in 1994 but never used. We have the original documentation such as letters from the Russian investment company and the import certificates. We are about to move departments within University Hospitals Southampton and we have limited storage space. If you are interested then perhaps you could contact me to discuss transportation.
In essence this is a argon gas plasma surgical device. It is derived from Russian space technology. In the west it mostly resembles an argon gas diathermy unit such as are made by Valleylab or Erbe and used routinely in surgical procedures now. The difference is that the machine creates an electric arc (not diathermy) and then blows argon gas through this to create the plasma. It is far more powerful than the argon diathermies in common use. It requires a 3 phase power supply.
These is only one such device in the UK and it is completely new and essentially unused. I am certain it will be of interest.
The demensions are:
H (from the floor to the highest point on the swinging arm) 6ft 8in
L (from the rear of the machine to the end of the swinging arm) 5ft
W 1ft 7in
I shall look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards
Elise Patey
